Type locality of Hippocampus abdominalis. Ranges from the Three Kings Islands to the Snares Islands except Northwest South Island (Ref. 45524). Common around shores (Ref. 9003). Recorded from bottom trawls off the east coast of South Island (Ref. 58461). Voucher specimen(s) held at the NMNZ. Known from Akaroa, Nelson, Dunedin, Stewart Island, George Sound, Bay of Islands (Ref. 30915). Some sold for Korean traditional medicine (hanyak). Also Ref. 30915, 45493, 75154, 115213.
